Welcome

My name is Ninevehta Khoshaba – ܢܝܼܢܘܵܝܬܵܐ ܚܘܿܫܵܒܵܐ in Surit.

I’m an Assyrian-American from Chicago, Illinois. I’m a sociology graduate fascinated by the domestic and global social forces that shape our lives. I’m particularly interested in issues surrounding education and accessibility. It’s so important to apply an intersectional lens—taking into account systems of inequality—to understand this world and to imagine one that is more inclusive.

But imagination is not enough.

Through qualitative research, sharp analytical skills, and compassionate communication, I aim to educate and take action to remedy the systemic barriers to equity and accessibility in our society.

Education

Northeastern Illinois University ‘22

  • BA in Sociology; dual minors in History and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

  • GPA: 3.88/4.00 (magna cum laude).

  • Relevant coursework: Sociological Analysis; Sociological Research Methods; Critical Writing in Sociology; Social Inequalities & Social Change; Sociology of Education; Sociology of Youth Culture; Logic.

Sociology

My coursework in sociology provided me with the analytical skills to understand the world around me and the weight of social forces and institutions that affect our lives in various ways. In particular, I was drawn to two subjects:

  1. The homogenization, racialization, and criminalization of Middle Eastern communities in the post-9/11 United States.

  2. The reinforcement of social inequalities in the United States through the institution of education.

WGS

To complement my major, I took up Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies to focus on dominant dimensions of social stratification: gender and sexuality. This minor let me explore these constructs and how they’ve been challenged across generations. I adopted a critical lens on how gender is done and undone in institutions from the nuclear family to the workplace. I also applied an intersectional lens to explore how feminism can harm those it claims to save when done in the absence of racial and class consciousness.

History

Lastly, to understand the historical contingency of our time and the story of how we built and adopted the social forms we take for granted today, I studied the history of capitalism, disability, crime, science, and more.

As an Assyrian-American, I claim an identity that many violently assert is extinct while forces on the ground in the Middle East violently try to make this a reality. Against ongoing colonialism and historical revisionism, history and questions of historiography are crucial tools for resistance and survival.
